API: calling a video model from software
An API, an application programming interface, lets software send a request to a model and get the result back without anyone opening the app. From 4 source pages, read 2026-09-25; no maker pays to be listed.
Of the 28 tools in the register, 25 document one. Runway describes its developer platform as a way to bring its models into other apps and products; Luma offers generation APIs for creative products and production pipelines; LTX promises production video from a single call.
Most are asynchronous: a request starts a job, and the result is fetched when the job finishes. OpenAI's guide for Sora says the finished MP4 is fetched once the job is complete.
For a studio, an API is what turns a model into part of its own tools: a batch run overnight, a review screen that shows every take, a generation started from a change in the script.
It also moves the cost from a subscription to use, which the introductory pages rarely spell out.

2Where a drama generator fits
Read against “API”, this is how SceneMixer describes the matching stage of its own pipeline:
SceneMixer separates the script language from the production language: the output (episode outlines, storyboards, on-screen text) follows your interface language, and target-region localization adapts character names, casting, and scenery for Western, East Asian, Southeast Asian, or Latin American audiences.

Every segment starts with a short header that sets the stage before the first shot: Location (a scene chip), Time, Weather, the Opening frame (what the first frame shows), Set dressing (what is in the room, and any background people) and Props (the objects the segment uses).
