Subtitle files: SRT, VTT and captions left off
Subtitle files such as SRT and VTT hold text and timing apart from the picture, so captions can be switched on, translated or corrected without a new render. From 4 source pages, read 2026-09-25; no maker pays to be listed.
Descript exports subtitles as a separate SRT or VTT file, and HeyGen returns both for translated videos. Kapwing lets Pro users download subtitles as SRT, and accepts SRT or VTT files for upload. SceneMixer leaves captions off its videos on purpose, so text is added at the platform instead.
The four readings agree on the principle: text belongs in its own layer.
Burned-in captions freeze one language into the file and cannot be fixed without re-rendering.
The other 24 tools in the register say nothing about subtitles on the pages read.
Upload matters as much as download: a translated SRT can be brought back in and timed against the same cut.
